Coventry based Cycling Team “Team Jewson—M.I.Racing—Polypipe—McCann”—came away from the Final round of the British Cyclo Cross Championship series—with out the results they had wanted.
The Event at Shrewsbury , was always going to be difficult, and recent weather made the riding very tricky in places—but that apart—Team Director Mick Ives said “they will have to lift their game if they want to do well in the British Championships at Peel Park , Bradford the 2nd week in January”
Of the Veteran riders –LVRC National Champion and Midland Champion –Kirby Bennett was the highest placed in the 50+ event—in 8th place—But only after a tough chase thro the field, after any earlier crash , when a rider fell in front of him , bringing him down very heavily, onto the cracked Ribs he received in a crash 2 weeks ago—the incident dropped him back to 30th place, , clearly one of the fastest riders in the race, and in considerable pain , he ploughed thro the very high class field , just beating his team mate Ian Field at the finish —Coventry member Peter Busby, was another rider suffering from Injuries –his received in a crash a week earlier at the World Championships in Belgium , where he hurt his Neck—on Sunday he was involved in a battle with team mates Tim Stowe from Wellesbourne –who is still struggling with a damaged Knee, but showed signs of getting back with the top riders , and Geoff Giddings, who spent much of the earlier part of the day looking after son Josh in his race
Busby finished 18th , Stowe 19th and Giddings 23rd.
It is hoped that the Team will make a bid to regain the Team, Championship in the 50 race at Bradford, -Team leader and former World Champion Phil Roach, was missing , and he would have been expected to have been up with Bennett and Wright , which would have been good –Ives said”to win the Team Championship , we need 3 riders in the top 10 to be safe—so everything is possible at Bradford.”
Neil Mansfield riding for M.I.Racing Academy finished 45th in the 40+ race, and his wife Caroline 24th in the Ladies event with M.I.Racing’s Lindsey Nell in 13th place.
In the Under 16 boys race –Ed Woodward riding his first event in that class , finished 24th and regular winner Finn Mansfield , struggled with a heavy cold to cross the line in 28th position .
Better results in the Under 14 yrs Boys , where Josh Giddings finished a hard fought race in 3rd position to claim 3rd Overall in the series , team mate Jack Brough finished 14th , and Lotta Mansfield finished a very creditable 7th in the Girls 14+ race, all riding for M.I.Racing Youth Academy.
