It was another brilliant weeks racing for Coventry’s only Elite Cycling Team. Within the space of 7 days we have promoted the U.K’s Biggest ever Veterans Road Race –The Polypipe 96 mile Battle of Edge Hill. We have also won 3 more British Cycling Championships, plus Roundd 2 of the British National Veterans Road Race series, taken the 1st 3 places in the Midlands Friday Evening Mountain Bike Summer season series and broke the Teams 10 mile Time Trial record.
67 year old Mick Allan won the British Cycling 5 km Scratch and 5 km Point to Point National Championships, and team mate Derrick Woodings won the British Cycling 5km Scratch and finished 2nd in the 5 km Points race for riders 75+. Meanwhile 45 year old Ian Coper finished 3rd and Bronze Medal in the Points Race at the Newport Velodrome-South Wales during the week making the total of British Cycling Championship’s won by the team to 11.
In Yorkshire Mike Twelves won Round 2 of the Percy Stallard Bio-Racer National Road Race series, over a very tough course. Twelves broke clear of the leading breakaway group with 2 miles to go and finished a clear winner. Team mate –Warwick’s leading rider –Jon Stevenson finished a brilliant 3rd. The 45 mile race consisted of 5 laps including a 3 mile climb over the moors, followed by a 40 m.p.h. descent and a short section of unsurfaced track before 2 very short 1 in 4 climbs up to the finish.
Twelves has won the Series for the past 2 seasons. The former Professional and British International missed Round 1 through illness but still hopes to keep the title again this season.
There is no stopping Nuneaton’s Kirby Bennett. He dominated the Veteran Midland Friday Evening Mountain Bike event at East Carlton, Northants, as he has done throughout the series. Bennett won the event, with Team Mates Peter Busby in 2nd and Tim Stowe in 3rd. With 2 events to go in the 2015 series, they are 1st , 2nd and 3rd in the series – such is the strength of the team!
The Team’s Time Trial record for 10 miles was shattered twice this week. Shipston on Stour team member Jonathan Wears recorded 19 mins 19 secs in the Swift R.C. event Near Hull on Wednesday, and then not content with that, he improved the Team Record to a staggering 18 mins 40 secs at the weekend in the City R.C. event. In the same event newly crowned double British Veteran Track Champion Mick Allan set a New Age related Record for 10 mile. The 67 year old rider recorded 20 mins 43 secs.
Next Sunday, the Team will be organising the “Omloop van der Dries Dorpen” Road Race—a special event of 35 miles with 5 off road sections included. The Event starts and finishes at Flecknoe, between Southam and Daventry, and like the Battle of Edge Hill race should attract a lot of spectators. The Race is Sponsored by Coventry’s only Lightweight Cycle Dealer “Ride” and starts at 10-00am. Many local riders are taking part, including 7 from the Team Jewson—M.I.Racing—Polypipe team , along with “man in form” Darren Atkins from Kenilworth.
