The 2021/22 Cyclo Cross season ended on a high note for Coventry based Cycling Team “Team Jewson–M.I.Racing–Polypipe–McCann” when their star rider, Kenilworth’s Darren Atkins, claimed his 12 victory of the season with an outstanding performance at the event at Misterton Hall, near Lutterworth, the final event of the Leicester series when he literally pulverised the opposition, breaking clear of the 100+ field in the first few yards of the 40 minute race never to be seen by the chasers again.
During the season Atkins contested 16 races, won 12, including 3rd in World Champs, 2nd in National Champs and 2nd in a Midland event and had mechanical problems in another. Add to this he is also the Overall winner of the Midland Cyclo Cross series once more, Team Boss Mick Ives said, “It’s be a remarkable season for Darren, so professional in his approach to events, and so clinical in his riding, in what is a very demanding sport. He has been an inspiration to the whole team and I congratulate him for what he has done for the Team and Sponsors.”
More success followed for the team at Misterton Hall, when Kirby Bennett rode a brilliant race out classing the current World Champion to win the 60 + race and finishing in 4th place overall in the 50+ event, pipped for 3rd overallon the line by a younger rider.
Coventry’s Peter Busby finished in 11th place in the 50+ race.
The Team will now prepare for the Road and Time Trial season due to begin in March with the addition of several new and powerful riders to the squad.
