National Trophy Cyclocross Success for Team Enable-MI Racing-Townsend Vehicle Hire

The cyclocross season is now in full swing and the excellent results have kept pouring in for the riders from the top midlands based cycling team Team Enable-MI Racing-Townsend Vehicle Hire.

Over the weekend of 4th and 5th October the Moorways sports village in Derby played host to round 1 of the 2024/25 National Trophy Cyclocross series. Day 1 saw a number of the teams riders competing against other top riders from around the UK. There was a strong showing in the mens 50-59 race with Nick Whitley riding to a brilliant 3rd place. Teammate Darren Atkins was 4th and Nick Popham 14th. In the mens 60+ race Coventry based Pete Busby was 14th and Mark Garrett 25th.  Day 2 saw Mold based rider and the current Welsh Junior Cross Country Mountain bike champion Layla Bradbrook compete in the Junior race and finish in 16th place. Round 2 of the series will take place in South Shields over the weekend of 26-27 October.

Rounds 4 and 5 of the West Midlands Cyclocross League finally provided some better racing conditions after the unseasonably wet and muddy start to the earlier rounds. Round 4 held in Redditch saw Kenilworth based Darren Atkins and Cannock based Nick Popham take second and third places respectively in the veteran 50-59 age category race. In the same race Christian Morgan finished 13th, Andy Jackson 45th and Alan Buxcey 58th. In the veteran 60+ age category race Mark Garrett finished in 9th place. In the combined Junior, Senior and Veteran 40+ race Jefferson Tear-Verweij finished in 4th place in the junior race. Warwick based rider, Thomas Bradley finished in 16th place in the senior race. Round 5 held at the Heart of England Events Centre near Fillongley saw an excellent head-to-head battle in the veteran 50-59 race between teammates Darren Atkins and Nick Whitley. After attacking in the woodland section of the course Atkins managed to pull out a short lead over Whitley which he was able to extend over the final lap to take the victory.  Christian Morgan finished in 15th place, Andy Jackson in 44th and Alan Buxcey in 61st. In the Veteran 60+ race Mark Garrett finished in 5th place. In the women’s 40-49 age group race Lynsey Whitley finished in 4th place. In the mens junior race, despite suffering with a heavy cold, Jefferson Tear-Verweij finished in an excellent 3rd place. Colin Miller managed 4th place in the veteran 40-49 race and Thomas Bradley 18th in the senior race.

Staying in the Midlands, round 2 of the Leicestershire cyclocross league took place at Misterton Hall near Lutterworth. In the veteran 50-59 race Nick Popham took 4th place while in the veteran 60+ race Pete Busby finish an excellent 2nd place. Teammates Richard Perham and Raymond Cochrane finished in 52nd and 62nd places respectively.

Further north, round 4 of the North West Cyclocross league took place at the Beacon Country Park near Skelmersdale. Mold based sisters Layla and Holly Bradbrook rode in the womens under 23 race with Layla finishing in a very strong 3rd place and Holly not far behind in 5th.

Sunday 20th October will see Dynamic Rides Cycling Club host round 6 of the West Midlands Cyclocross league to be held once again at the Heart of England Events centre. During the day Team Enable-MI Racing-Townsend Vehicle Hire will be presenting the Steve Knight Memorial Race. This year the race will be for competitors in the male veteran 50+ race. In future years it is hoped that this memorial race will move round the different racing categories. Steve Knight was a member of the team for almost 30 years when he suddenly passed away in September 2023. Knight was one of the best British cyclocross riders of his generation and was an inspiration and great friend to many.  The team will present a trophy to the winning rider and there will a generous cash prize list on offer.

It was a successful end to the time trial season for the teams riders. Completing in the Cardiff 100 Miles Road Cycling Club event held on the popular R10/17 course between Raglan and Abergavenny, Worcester based Luke Allen rode to victory over the 10 mile course, winning the road bike category in a time of 21 minutes and 41 seconds. Allen’s time was good enough to finish in 10th place overall. Leamington based teammate Mark Wise, riding a time trial bike finished in equal 10th place with the same time as Allen. Nuneaton based Simon Law finished in 12th place in a time of 21 minutes and 44 seconds. The combined times of Allen, Wise and Law earnt them the title of fastest team. Teammates Mick Wills and Andy Jackson also made the trip to South Wales and finished in 21st and 29th places respectively.
