Victorious Vets
At the British National Cyclo-cross Championships in Falkirk, Scotland, it was a weekend of mixed fortunes for riders from the Coventry based cycling team – Team Enable-M.I.Racing-McCann. Recent dry conditions made for a very fast course in Falkirk’s Callender Park.
The team’s star youth rider, Jefferson Tear-Verweij got off to a great start in the under-16 race before crashing into a fallen rider’s bike and suffering a front wheel puncture. Unable to avoid the incident, Jefferson had no choice but to limp back to the pits for a bike change. Battling on for the remainder of the race, Jefferson managed a very respectable 33rd place overall. A disappointing result, given his excellent recent results.
In the Veteran 50+ race one of the team’s star riders, Wrexham based Nick Whitley, rode to a brilliant bronze medal. Nick managed to get into second place on the 4th lap before slipping back to third on the final lap. Nick’s performance was backed up by teammates Darren Atkins who finished 10th and Nick Popham who finished 12th. These excellent performances were enough for the team to win the gold medal for the best veteran 50+ team. An outstanding result!
In the Veteran 60+ race Pete Busby was also hampered by an early crash and suffered a painful hand injury. Despite this, Pete managed ride on and eventually finish the race in 20th place.
