Victories for M.I.Race riders – another brilliant weekends racing for Coventry based “Team Jewson–M.I.Racing–Polypipe–McCann–7 formation” cycling team.
It all began on Saturday afternoon, when the teams oldest racing member, proved once again to be the fastest Time Trialist in the U.K. 75 year old Mick Allen set a new National Age Related Record for 10 miles, whilst competing in the East Anglia 10 mile event near Cambridge, recording a time of 22 minutes 19 seconds. A fantastic achievement! Mick followed it up with victory in the British Masters Time Trial Championships at Napton in S.Warks the following morning – his first National Championship victory of the season.
Also at the BMCR National Championships at Napton were 9 other team mates, Leamington’s Mark Wise producing a brilliant ride to claim 3rd place in the hotly contested championship for riders 55 and over with a time of 45 minutes 51 seconds for the very tough 19 mile course.
His other team members including Craig McKee, making a return to the sport after a 3 year break 44:16, Rob O’Connor just missing out on a podium position in the 60-65 championship with 49:48, Andy Jackson 50:55, Lady Veteran member Diana Egerton-Warburton 51:11, Greg Ashley 51:17, Andy Oliver 51:41, Malc Moore 52:52, and Jeff Baird 53:01
The Championship was organised by Team M.I.Racing for the 17th time in 19 years, and was sponsored by JEWSON.
Further afield the Cyclo Cross season got under way, and true to form, Team Jewson M.I.Racing the current Veteran National Team Champions got off to a brilliant start. Kenilworth member Darren Atkins who joined the team once more after several seasons in other teams, won Round 1 of the Midland series at Ullenhall, in Warwickshire, leading almost from the start, with former multi National Champion and team mate Steve Knight in 2nd place.
In 2019 Atkins finished 2nd in the British Championships, 3rd in the European Championships in Italy and 5th in the World Championships in Belgium, and is with out doubt the team leader, for what should be a very successful season for the team, with at least 10 team riders taking part.
Other places at Ullenhall were Brian Tear 12th, Peter Busby 13th and 5th best over 55. New Lady member Karen Summers won the Ladies Veteran race for riders 50+, beating the reigning National Champion and Junior rider Jude Chamberlain finished 2nd in the Junior race part.
Team Jewson–M.I.Racing will be organising the BMCR National Cyclo Cross Championships on December 28th 2021, at a new venue in S.Warwickshire, it will be the 15th time that the team has organised the championships in the past 16 years and the organiser will be Mick Ives.
