Team Jewson M.I.Racing Thule CNP youngest junior rider, 17 yr old Hugh Carthy has once again hit the Cycling headlines—this time in America.
Following his terrific performance in the recent International “Tour of Ireland” 5 day stage race, where he won the King of the Mountains Jersey, Hugh was invited to be a guest rider in the American “Bay Hill Capital” race team for the 4 stage “Green Mountain Stage Race in Mississippi” which included in the 80 strong field, the very best American Junior riders.
Hugh finished 14th on stage 1, a 6 mile Time Trial, 42nd on stage 2 with the same time as the winner, 4th on the tough 3rd stage, and 15th on the final stage, which had to be shortened due to hurricane force winds and torrential rain giving him the honour of best place rider in the Team, and an incredible 5th place overall, just 1 min and 17secs behind the winner in the biggest race of his life. An amazing performance
Back in the U.K.—Team Jewson continued to chalk up the victories including a championship win.
Warwicks top cyclist John Stevenson finished a very close 2nd in the last but 1 event of the season long “Percy Stallard” championships, where he competed in the East Coast classic at Scarborough, N Yorks. Jon has won the series for the past 2 seasons and now with 1 remaining event, can not be beaten to take the championship again this year, an amazing feat.
Winner of the East Coast event was team mate and ex Professional Phil Wilkins, both had been part of a 6 man break, that went clear in the early stages of the 52 mile race. In the race for riders 55 yrs and older John French finished in 4th place.
In the Midlands, new signing Phil Blacker kicked off the Midland Cyclo Cross season, with victory at Redditch, his 2nd win in his only 2 rides for the team beating team mate and former British Champion, Steve Knight, it would have been a unique , 1, 2, 3, for the team had Mark James not punctured on the final lap. Current National Championship Silver medallist, Darren Atkins (Kenilworth), could have rode the Veterans race, but chose to ride with the Seniors, and came home an excellent 4th his first race since Febuary.
Team Jewson are the current National Team Champions for 40 + and 50+, and on these performances, look certain to be the top team in the coming season, once again
