It just gets better for Team Jewsons M.I.Racing Thule, Veteran Cyclo Cross squad.
For the 4th weekend running the team have produced the first 3 riders in the 40+ Veterans race in the Midland series (the hottest cyclo cross area in U.K.) this time at the Wolverhampton Wheelers promotion at Allesley Stadium, Wolverhampton. Kenilworth’s Darren Atkins was in fantastic form to win the race by almost 2 ½ minutes, from his teammates former British Champion Steve Knight, and Phil Blacker, what was even more impressive was that Team Jewson provided Lorenzo Buratti in 6th place and Stratfords Brian Tear in 8th place. To have 5 riders in top 8 places is unheard of. not too far behind was newcomer to the sport, Alan Buxcey (Coventry) in 15th place. So impressive was Atkins performance, he caught the whole of the Senior race except the first 2 riders, who finished just in front of him, the seniors start 1 minute ahead of the 40+ Veterans.
It doesn’t end there, Stratfords Martine Verweij continued her dominance of the Ladies section with yet another brilliant victory, John Gaberial (Hinckley) finished 2nd in the 60+ race, and Tim Stowe (Wellesbourne) finished 4th in the 55+ race. First victory for new season signing Phil Roach (Rugby) when he completely out classed the race for riders 50 and over, at the same meeting the Welsh Veteran Champion, finished 4th in the UCI World Championships in America in January, and has joined the Jewson Team replacing former National Champion, Steve Davies, who races for a local team now, down in Devon where he lives. Roach will target the British Championships a race he dearly wants to win, as well as lead the Team to their 6th Team title in that event the National series, will figure highly on his list, as well as trying to retain his Welch title. Then if form is good, he will once again aim for the World Championships, held again in America. In January Team Director Mick Ives has long been a fan of Phil and says “I signed Phil up many months ago, but his work commitments have delayed the start to his season, however you can now expect some really fantastic performances from him, as he is very motivated by his new team presence, and back up. I wish him every success.”
Further afield, Team member Mark James, made it 4 in a row, when he won the Veterans race at Brecon, Wales, Matt Denby won the Veterans 45 + race in the Notts. and Derby promotion at Allestree, Derby. And Veteran Lady Louise won the Ladies race at Alford in Lincolnshire.
Not a bad selection of results !
